Sicily is so many things to me. As the home of my great-grandparents, the island has drawn me to it. I’ve met second cousins who helped me learn more about my heritage than I would have otherwise. Since our first meeting in 1988, Nino and Concetta (See My Essays: Our Grandmothers Were Sisters), have remained dear and welcoming despite the number of years between my visits. In 2022, I circled the island with a long-time girlfriend, Jill, whose grandparents also immigrated to Detroit from Sicily. We explored Greek ruins, great restaurants and intriguing cities with stairs as sidewalks.
